The 2014 campaign Tourney 3 Liberty

Congratulations to the top performers in this tournament, Matt & Al with 29.66 lb, Butch & Larry with 24.27 and Davis & Spera with 21.61lbs. Fantastic effort! As for Max and me, it was good team effort. Unfortunately, this was only my third time on Liberty this year and the second for Max. This put us at a big disadvantage, as the vegetation has changed a lot since last year. We were fortunate to have a small limit before 7:30 AM. It’s interesting how an early limit changes ones fishing perspective, allowing us to fish very hard but in a more focused and un-rushed manner than if we were chasing a limit all day. The bite slowed dramatically for us by 10:00 AM, but we fished our plan and made some adjustments throughout the day, leading to Max catching two good upgrades. We had our final 8 fish, 18.26 lbs, limit at 12:30 PM, with two small (easily upgradeable) fish in the livewell and 3.5 hours to fish. Unfortunately, there were no upgrades to be found. Finish place was 9th. Team Marchant & Marchant has a lot of room for improvement, but Fishing MRA helps us enormously. We look forward to future tournaments.

Deja Vu All Over Again - Elliott and Farace win at Liberty

This is probably not the last time that we can just cut and paste the headline and results. Again, Matt Elliott and Al Farace easily bested the field - this time at Liberty Reservoir on Aug 10, 2014. Their eight fish limit weighed an eye-popping 29.66 lbs to take their 2nd of 3 MRA 2014 tournaments. (As a refresher, Matt with partner Bill Constantine took 3 of the 6 MRA 2013 tournaments.)

Second place with a distant but huge bag of 24.27 went to Larry Barger and Butch Wilson. Third place with a 21.61 lb. limit went to the team of Davis and Spera.

Big fish honors went to the teams of Elliot/Farace and Martin/Novak for a 4.56 lb. largemouth and 3.90 smallmouth, respectively.

The Anglers of the Year race remains tight with the teams of Wisner/Wisner and Davis/Spera tied atop the leaderboard. Full Results

The 2014 Campaign Tourney 2 The Ugly

I promised the Good, bad and ugly. Here is, what I hope will be, the ugliest. First, another congratulations to the top three finishers. With weights over 20 Lbs., they really got the job done. Our team had a significantly different performance. Two keepers for just over 3 lbs. total, and lots of undersized fish. This was our worst performance on our worst reservoir, Prettyboy, in 5 years. This was particularly disappointing to our team because our practices were pretty encouraging. Mid-day, Max and I discussed a change in strategy, and we made a few adjustments. Unfortunately, there was no change in results. Late in the day, we did find one big fish. A rookie mistake caused me to lose it. My drag was set too light, causing a poor hook-set. Fish lost after a 30 second battle. Heartbreaking because it would have been the only really good fish in the livewell. In the end, it was another day of fishing with my son, which is a good thing. Next we begin preparations for Liberty. Hope to have a happy report to come.

Ahlfeldt and Lawson Win at Prettyboy

Mike Ahlfeldt and Shane Lawson triumphed at the second stop on the 2014 Metro Reservoir Angler's 2014 Invitational Tournament Trail. Their limit of 8 fish weighed 21.24 pounds to take first at Prettyboy Reservoir on July 19th, 2014. With several lost good fish that would have given them first, coming in second was the team of Waino Anderson and Ron Wolfe with a 20.54 pound limit. Eeked out of 2nd by .14 pounds and coming in third was the team of Brian McQuaid and Bobby Standiford.

For big fish honors, the largemouth lunker award went to the team of Chad and Lenny Wisner for a 5.42 largemouth. Larry Barger and Butch Wilson had the largest smallmouth at 2.82 lbs.

Hollasch and Chamberlin Champions at Liberty WW

Kevin Hollasch and Hunter Chamberlin bested the field to win the second 2014 Weekday Warrior Tournament which was held on July 9th at Liberty Reservoir. Their winning limit of 8 fish weighed 22.46 lbs. The team of Allender and Clevenger took second with 21.01 while the team of Martin and Herigan took 3rd with 20.32 lbs. The team of Anderson and Isaac took the daily lunker award with a 4.76 lb. largemouth.

The 2014 Campaign Tourney 1

I promised the good, the bad and the ugly. Here it is: From the standpoint of fun, this was a great tournament. They all are. It was great to talk with other club members before and after the tourney, and it is always a pleasure to spend time fishing with my son, Max. Max and I were happy with our practice efforts, which helped us to identify several locations that were holding 3+ Lb. fish. As important, our practices helped us to identify lures and presentations that were very productive. As far as the results go, we finished with a limit of 8 fish weighing 18.78 Lbs., which was 1 Lb. short of our goal for this tourney. Our only regret is that we had one dead fish, due to gill injury. We were a little less than thrilled with 10th place, but hats-off to the competition. Nine teams really produced some great weight ahead of us. The action was sporadic for us. We didn't complete our limit until nearly 2:00 PM, with our final culls at 3:15. The next tourney is Prettyboy. Our goal is an 8 fish limit. Sadly we haven't weighed an 8 fish limit at Prettyboy in our previous 4 years with MRA. It will be a challenge, but that's what makes it fun! Congrats to everyone who fished Loch Raven!

Bigger fish, Better fishermen?

I was asked this question after the Loch Raven tournament weigh-in. " Bob do you think the bass have gotten bigger or have the fishermen gotten better?"It did not take long to give my opinion. The fisherman have definitely gotten better. Armed with the latest electronics and the knowledge to get the most out of them, technique specific rods, high speed reels,and so many choices of line that let them detect even the slightest bite. These are just a few things available to today's fisherman or fisher woman. Just buying these items will not make someone a better angler, they have to put the time on the water to to understand how to use them to get the most out of them.Today's angler has to keep up with the latest trends and techniques to be able to compete at a tournament level.The best anglers know how and where to catch the better quality fish. I started reservoir tournament fishing in 1982 and today's weights are higher with an 8 fish limit then they were with a 10 fish limit. Catch and release has also had a beneficial impact as well. How would you answer the same question?

Elliott and Farace Victorious at Loch Raven

The first event of the Metro Reservoir Anglers, Inc. 2014 Invitational Tournament Trail kicked off in style at Loch Raven Reservoir. Despite the devastating grass kill due to the extremely cold winter, this fishery showed it still has the fish. The team of Matt Elliott and Al Farace posted a huge sack of 8 fish weighing 27.13 lbs to take the title and season points lead. Not far behind and posting an impressive 26.02 lb limit was the new team of Steve Allender and Sean Dobbs. (What a way to make a first impression!) Rounding out the placeholders in 3rd with 23.37 lbs. was the team of Martin and Novak. Big fish honors went to the team of Gordon and Wolfe with a 4.60 lb largemouth. Full Results

Weekday Warrior 2014 Kicks off at Prettyboy

On June 18th the first 2014 Weekday Warrior Bass Tournament hosted by The Metro Reservoir Anglers, Inc. was held on Prettyboy Reservoir. Congratulations to the team of Ohnheiser and Wisner who continued their success at these WWBT tournaments with a limit of 8 fish weighing 20.19 lbs. Second place went to the team of Godwin and Walker with 17.54. The team of Bertazon and Broadwater fell to 3rd courtesy due to deduction with an official weight of 17.33.

2014 ready to go!

With the first MRA tournament scheduled to start this Saturday I want to wish everyone good luck and to have a safe tournament season. I hope I have everything prepared ( checked about 20 times ) and the fish cooperate ( not pickerel ) for a good year on the tournament trail. See you on the water!!
