Does anyone know why there are so many dead fish of all sizes along the shores around the Loch Raven Drive, Mildam Road and Providence Road areas. They all seem to be the same type of fish. We've never seen this before.
Ill have to research this but some of the other guys can chime in. As I mentioned in my fishing report from Saturday, I as well saw many dead gizzard shad floating and one area smelled fishy. My guess is a lot of these gizzard shad, as often happens with some panfish like crappie, just died after spawning... Just exhausted. Other guesses would be that in combination with the pretty drastic cold front that came in as well and/or maybe excessive runoff (e.g. From fertilizer, like maybe the golf course). The gizzard shad are probably very sensitive to such changes or stress. No wonder there are more birds over there for the easy pickings and why the fishing is off a bit.
Shad kill was the first thing that came to my mind. I didn't see any fish floating last weekend but I didn't run much of the lake.
Craig, some may disagree but I believe with this warming trend that 1st wave may come up and do their thing this next full moon. Especially, if the water keeps warming at this rate.
The water is warming fast... thanks for the post Craig!!!
