I recently took some colleagues fishing on 2 different days while practicing for the past Liberty tournament. (I have a simple system for inviting a list of non-tournament anglers to enjoy a day on the water that i'll write about in another blog entry.) Aside from all the cool electronic gadgets, probably the one basic piece of equipment i have (2 of) on my boat that everyone is amazed with and has undoubtedly paid for itself a thousand times over is my lure retrieval system. I'm not talking about the actual "knocker" that slides down your line and bumps the lure off the structure, but rather the system or device that holds or manages the line to the knocker. I've seen and used a bunch of different systems over the years ranging from my hands, a chalk line reel and a retractable clothesline spool. The latter had the functionality i was looking for but was bulky.
I eventually found the device pictured, which is the Auto-Trieve System. This unit which is only about 5"x5"x1" and mounts below your deck (1/2" hole required) and retrieves and stores the line. Its very easy to work by yourself. Once you bump the lure off, just reel your lure and lure retriever up while the line is retracting and not left a mess on your boat. To note, i just searched for this one quickly and could NOT find it quickly. (A challenge to everyone to find it online.) However if you find it i'd highly recommend it. I've been using my two (one mounted in front, one in back) for 10 years with no issues. It pays for itself many times over each trip.
