Always something happening on the water. I thought i'd share this one. On Monday, i was fishing over the Loch with a friend from work. Not long after he asked me if I'd ever been pulled over by DNR on the water and my claiming it is very rare, we were working lures along the shoreline. Out of the corner of my eye i could see a DNR guy ON THE BANK bounding towards us before he pushes brush aside and moves in for the big round up. (Lets just call him Rosco for fun.)
Rosco: Hey, what do you think you're doing?!
Me: Uh, fishing. What are YOU doing?
Rosco: You can't do that!
Me: Uh, do what? (I keep ripping my jerkbait while talking to Rosco.)
Rosco: That right there! You can't do that. Snagging fish is illegal!
Me: Uh, yes I CAN do that, I'm working a jerkbait.
Rosco: What? I dont know what you're saying.
Me: I'm working a jerkbait and this is how I/everyone works them.
Rosco: I dont know what you're talking about. You're not allowed to snag fish!
Me: You dont fish much do you? You dont know what a JERKbait is do you?
Rosco: No, I dont know what you're saying.
Me: (I reel the lure in and zip a cast 20 yards away right at the water a foot in front of his feet.) THAT is a jerkbait.
Rosco: (After looking in the water.) Oh. No. Ive never seen one of those before. I thought you just had a hook tied on. Pause. (To save face.) Well, could you show me your license from there? Just hold them up, you dont have to come closer - just show me from there.
Me and friend: (we hold up our license.)
Rosco: Ok. That looks good. Thanks.
Well, I'd have to say that was the first time i was in a boat and pulled over by a DNR guy on land. I do hope Rosco didnt get wrapped on the head with newspaper by Boss Hogg as he revealed the truth behind his planned unraveling of the Big Snagging gangs.
My only regret was not yelling to him after waving our license in the air from afar.. "Just so you know for next time and since you cant read it from there, my name is Bobby Standiford!... Cooh Cooh! Gik Gik!"
