We all can't wait to get our boats in the water and start fishing this year. The extremely cold winter has taken its toll on us and possibly our boats as well. When you launch your boat for the first time this season it is a good idea to wait a few minutes to inspect your boat for possible leaks. Bilge pump hoses and or livewell hoses or the pumps themselves are susceptible to splitting due to colder temps especially if water was left in them. ( one year I had a battery shift and broke the PVC collar in cold weather) . I was glad I had taken my time that day, I could hear the water rushing in!! If I would have ran straight up the lake I would never had heard it,until possibly too late. So take all of the possible precautions, wear life jackets take extra clothing and let someone know where you are fishing.Be Safe!

Great tip, Bob!
Great tip, Bob!
Just to add a little more to your point, its smart to inspect your boat before you launch, too. I spent 5 hours and $50 yesterday on my boat because when I lifted up my deck to check on my batteries all of my terminals were severely corroded and rusted. I took everything apart and trashed the old rusted bolts, nuts and washers. Then, I wire-brushed everything clean and installed stainless hardware and sprayed rust inhibitor on all terminals. I also wrapped electrical tape on all ends of my jumpers. I'm so glad I finally took the time to do this. I don't know much about the electrical side of our rigs and I envy the real experts on this topic.
For the experts I have a question.....Is it true and does it make a real difference when you are charging your system to leave your hatches open and allow air to circulate during the charge. I've heard that doing this drastically reduces corrosion and rust.
Does anybody know if this is FACT or MYTH?
Tks in advance.

Thanks Bobby....that makes a lot of sense....
Ian... Im no expert... but battery acid is very corrosive..and the boiling of the acid creates acidic humidity in a closed compartment.. which definately should corrode metal. so i would assume the vapors are very corrosive...and they are explosive given the slightest spark... I always open my compartments during charging..when i was younger a battery exploded in my boat right after i opened a closed compartment after charging... and the plastic from the top of the battery hit me in my forehead and left a cut... i was lucky the acid didnt get in my eyes... I now keep the compartment open while charging.. and keep safety glasses handy and "try to remember" to wear them whenever i go into my battery compartment..also I always apply a thin layer of marine grease to protect hardware from moisture.. it will help with preventing corrosion on the wire ends and hardware...

Tks, Dave. It definitely makes sense what you are saying. It's just one of those things I never really thought of in the past. First, I'm a believer that it does help reduce corrosion allowing air to circulate during the charge. Second, I'm sure it can't hurt to do it.
Tks again for your advice.
Good fishin'

I had to take it completely apart...i have had it 14 years now with no problems.. i got it fixed --- better then ever... but it took a few hours...and a trip to Lowes . glad i checked it before i drove to the lake... thanks Bobby....
