After embarrassing myself at the last Liberty tournament and seeing all those monsters caught, I thought I need to change my game plan and focus on larger fish.
First thing was to empty my boat of all my small baits, light line and sissy rods! Next step Bass Pro, heavy line, big fish baits to cover depths 30-45 feet. Ok a couple hundred bucks spent, but it's going to work right? Now head to Liberty at 5:00 am ready to conquer these fish I never catch during tournament time. I decide to fish my traditional spots that I have confidence in but just move out a lot farther and watch my electronics! 6:00 am set up ready to fish! Start with a giant crank bait that is bigger than most of my fish, after a few casts alternate between big spoon,Carolina rig large creature bait, and a heavy jig. 8:00 am still not a bite! I think I'll look in my rod locker for a small worm rod that maybe I left in there? ( I know I can catch a quick limit) Nope I really took them all out. 8:30ish move to another of my hotspots lol, start working in deep water with my assortment of lures, still no takers! Fish there till 9:45am, start thinking this is a stupid idea and I sure miss my finesse baits! 10:00 am. Try my third spot, first cast my rod doubles over with a 4 1/2 lb largemouth that slammed my C-rig. Wow what a great idea I had, this is sure fun I thought!!! 2 more hours go by with out a bite. I think about putting a 4" worm on a bait caster with 30lb braid but don't give in!! 12:15 another big bass slams my lure but comes unbuttoned before I see it. 2:30 with no more bites I start heading back down the lake when I see a man catching small bass one after another on guess what, a small worm rod!!!! I think about offering him a couple of hundred dollars for his combo but I forge on. I decide to try one more spot, 2:45 another big fish breaks off after a brief struggle &@@&??? So the days total 3 bites 1 bass Yikes!!! Guess I will try again this week. Maybe I might take 1 extra rod LOL.
